In 1862, the land on the Palace Embankment was given for the construction of palaces for Grand Duke Alexander and Vladimir. A.I. Rezanov was engaged in this project. He created an architectural masterpiece, the beauty of the exterior trim reminiscent of Italian Renaissance times palazzo. Palace rooms were decorated with rich collections of paintings, sculpture, weapons, objects of decorative art. It soon became one of the centers of social life in St. Petersburg. It was called "small imperial court". Since 1920 the palace was called "House of Scientists". It was managed to keep in its original form all the interiors of the palace, the opulent decoration of the state rooms, the majesty of the grand rooms.
